I'm on my second bird-feeder. The first one was a casualty in my on-going war with squirrels. It was a great feeder [sniff] and I ended up getting a ton of birds in my backyard. But it wasn't squirrel-proof and they ravaged the birdseed in there. Even when I moved it further from the main trunk of the tree, the squirrels would grab it and pull it over to themselves and munch to their hearts' content.
The feeder met its ultimate demise when the squirrels (apparently) figured out how to actually remove the feeder from the tree. For a few days in a row, I would come out after work and find the feeder on the other side of the yard, empty. Once it was on the ground, they chewed a hole through the main feeder tube. And then one day I came home and the feeder was...gone. Apparently they made it over the fence with it (or someone was playing a very elaborate prank).
So I have a new feeder. A squirrel-proof feeder. Filled with a new birdseed that was "guaranteed to attract cardinals!" So far? My squirrel-proof feeder is also a bird-proof feeder; cardinal seed or not. In the past three weeks, I've had one bird that I've seen on there. (But not one squirrel. Success!)
When I told TH about it, his responded with "Was he stuck? Was he lost?"
(Jackass)
So now I'm stuck. The feeder itself is nice. Maybe when I'm gone during the day, the birds live it up on my feeder. (I doubt it). I think the birds and I are in a game of chicken. Waiting to see who blinks first. For now I will just tell myself that it's just too hot and the birds aren't interested in anything other than water.
